# British Business Bank’s Advent backing spans two life-sciences mandates

The bank’s Advent Fund IV and Growth Fund commitments address different development stages, alongside a separate first-time-manager programme route.

The British Business Bank’s September backing for Advent Life Sciences covers two different financing jobs: early-stage product development and later clinical or commercial growth. Its agreed £60 million commitment to Advent Life Sciences Fund IV sits alongside £75 million committed to Advent Life Sciences Growth Fund. The distinction matters to a manager or LP assessing the strategy behind the bank’s participation, beyond the shared life-sciences label.

The bank’s [September 24 announcement](https://www.british-business-bank.co.uk/news-and-events/news/british-business-bank-agrees-commit-ps135m-two-new-advent-life-sciences-funds) describes backing of up to £135 million across the two funds. That is the bank’s announced participation, not either fund’s total size or a report of money already drawn by portfolio companies.

## Two funds address different development needs

Fund IV will support early-stage companies developing products that address significant clinical needs across healthcare and life sciences. The Growth Fund has a more specific geographic emphasis: mainly the UK. Its remit covers companies progressing through clinical development and the commercial scale-up of non-therapeutic assets with initial market traction.

That Growth Fund description is more useful than an unqualified “later-stage life sciences” tag. A company still moving through clinical development and a non-therapeutic business beginning commercial expansion can both fall within the stated remit. The release does not describe a strategy confined to approved medicines or established product revenues.

For a prospective LP, those are different financing tasks to evaluate. Fund IV’s stated purpose begins with early-stage product development; Growth adds clinical progression and a commercial-scaling route for non-therapeutic businesses. Advent’s transatlantic firm profile does not, by itself, establish that both funds have identical geographic mandates. Nor does the announcement establish an automatic progression of companies from Fund IV into Growth.

## An established specialist relationship

The bank places the commitments within a relationship dating to 2019, when it backed Advent Life Sciences Fund III. It also names subsequent company co-investments alongside Advent: Proximie in 2022 and Cyted Health in 2025.

This is a repeat relationship with a specialist manager, spanning fund participation and separately identified company investments. The new announcement therefore provides more than a name on an LP roster: it identifies two strategies the bank is supporting and the financing stages they serve. The earlier company investments demonstrate another form of participation; their amounts and terms are not disclosed in this release.

The programme’s operating layer also matters. The announcement says Patient Capital Funds is operated by British Patient Capital, a wholly owned commercial subsidiary of British Business Bank. British Patient Capital makes commitments for itself and for third-party investors whose investments it manages. That identifies the operator; it does not settle the precise legal subscriber or funding source for every commitment.

## A separate route for first-time managers

The [August 7 Investor Pathways announcement](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/venture-capital-access-expanded-for-early-stage-companies-in-uk) describes a different proposition: an intention to invest a further £100 million phase of a £400 million initiative supporting first-time venture fund managers from varied backgrounds. It also reports an earlier commitment of up to £90 million to ten microfunds in June. These are programme and cohort figures, not individual Advent tickets.

August’s statement said applications for the next cohort would open in autumn 2026. It does not establish that an application window remained open on October 22, or that Investor Pathways funded either Advent vehicle. Altss’s [EIF announcement analysis](https://altss.com/blog/eif-q3-2026-fund-announcements-signatures-pledges-targets) explains the broader need to retain the relationship between a programme, an institution’s amount and the investee fund.

The substantive contrast here is the manager route and investment task. Investor Pathways describes a programme phase for first-time managers. Advent’s announcement records continued backing of an established specialist through two distinct fund mandates, including a Growth Fund that addresses both clinical development and non-therapeutic commercial scaling.
