# October 2026 private credit research: what commitments, leverage and affiliated vehicles measure

Audax, Oaktree and Ares announcements use different capital definitions. Separate equity, leverage, related vehicles and strategy scope before comparing.

A private-credit fundraising headline is useful only if its capital definition travels with the number. In the source sample examined here, Audax reported both equity commitments and a broader investable-capital figure; Oaktree combined a fund with related investment vehicles; and Ares reported a structured-solutions raise for a fund and affiliated vehicles within its Private Equity Secondaries strategy. Adding those headline amounts would obscure both the capital boundaries and the investment strategies.

This October 15, 2026 research note compares three manager announcements dated September 30 and October 1. Audax's close belongs to September 30, even though it provides relevant context for an October private-credit research workflow. This is a document comparison, not a census of October closes, a largest-funds ranking or a performance comparison.

## Audax: $5.4 billion of equity and $10 billion of investable capital

Audax Private Debt announced the final close of Direct Lending Solutions Fund III on September 30, 2026. Its [manager announcement](https://www.audaxprivatedebt.com/news/audax-private-debt-closes-largest-fund-in-firms-history-raising-10-billion-in-investable-capital) reports $5.4 billion in equity commitments at the fund's hard cap, against a $4 billion target. It separately reports $10 billion of investable capital, including targeted leverage, commitments in related vehicles investing alongside the fund, and an investment by the general partner.

Those disclosures answer different questions. The equity-commitment figure describes one fundraising measure; the investable-capital figure describes a broader pool with additional components. The source does not allocate the difference among targeted leverage, related vehicles and the GP investment. It would therefore be incorrect to call that entire difference borrowing or to derive a disclosed leverage ratio from the two headline amounts.

The comparison with the predecessor also needs consistent definitions. Audax says DLS Fund II closed in 2022 with $3 billion in equity commitments and more than $5 billion of investable capital. Equity should be compared with equity, and the broader figure should retain its broader label. Neither comparison establishes investment performance.

The release describes DLS Fund III as lending to private-equity-owned middle-market companies. As of the September 30 announcement, it had committed approximately $1.5 billion. That is a dated commitment statement, not proof that $1.5 billion had already been funded to borrowers or that all fundraising proceeds had been deployed.

## Oaktree: $2 billion across ABF I and related vehicles

On October 1, Brookfield announced the final close of Oaktree Asset-Backed Finance Fund I with $2 billion of commitments across the fund and related investment vehicles, achieving its target fundraise. The [official issuer release](https://oaktreecapital.gcs-web.com/news-releases/news-release-details/oaktree-asset-backed-finance-fund-closes-2-billion) also identifies U.S. public pension plans and sovereign wealth funds among the institutional-investor categories.

The wording supports a $2 billion combined commitment figure. It does not state that the entire amount belongs to the standalone ABF I vehicle. An allocator database or fundraising comparison should preserve that qualification rather than drop it during normalization.

The same announcement describes Oaktree's ABF strategy as providing flexible capital to originators in equipment leasing, transportation, consumer, real estate and infrastructure. It also reports more than $19 billion invested across Oaktree's broader ABF platform and more than $60 billion for Brookfield's broader asset-based finance platform. Those are platform-level figures with different scopes from the ABF I close. They should not be counted as additional commitments raised by ABF I in October.

## Ares: structured solutions are a separate strategy boundary

Ares announced on October 1 that it had raised approximately $4.2 billion for Ares Global Structured Solutions Fund and affiliated vehicles. Its [issuer announcement](https://www.ir.ares.com/news/ares-raises-dollar42-billion-for-inaugural-global-structured-solutions-strategy/1b24d825-bbd9-4278-9841-72041f3187bf) says the fund significantly exceeded its $1 billion target.

The $4.2 billion disclosure includes affiliated vehicles. The source does not provide a standalone-fund allocation within that combined amount. Dividing the combined amount by the fund target would not establish a standalone-fund fundraising multiple.

Ares places AGSS within Private Equity Secondaries. It describes supporting managers seeking to increase GP fund commitments, seed new strategies through structured LP commitments and facilitate succession plans. That is a different stated use of capital from the operating-company direct-lending description in the Audax release. A private-credit monitor should make this classification visible if it includes AGSS as adjacent private-capital context.

## A practical record for institutional research

For these three announcements, keep five fields together: the announcement date, closing stage, named vehicle, reported capital measure and any additional vehicles or financing included. Record the strategy in the same entry. A headline can then be used without turning equity commitments into borrowing capacity or moving a secondaries strategy into a direct-lending category.

The original contribution here is the reconciliation of those definitions. The records do not establish relative returns, risk, fee levels or LP suitability. They also cannot establish market-wide fundraising momentum from three selected announcements. Those questions require different evidence.

For readers moving from a news record to manager selection, the [Altss LP due-diligence checklist](https://altss.com/blog/lp-due-diligence-checklist-2026) provides a related research path. The next request to a manager can be concrete: identify the capital attributable to the fund, disclose financing assumptions separately, and date any deployment figure.

## Methodology and source boundaries

Altss compared three public first-party announcements available on October 15, 2026. Audax's date is September 30; Brookfield/Oaktree and Ares are October 1. The figures retain the managers' stated units and scopes. No proprietary performance dataset, estimated leverage split or combined fundraising total is used. Manager statements are attributed reporting, and announcements alone do not independently verify realized fund returns.
