Q3 RIA M&A Research: Assets, Deal Value and Status

Read Q3 2026 acquisition announcements with a clear distinction between managed assets, purchase consideration and confirmed closing, using original sources.

RIA M&A research should separate announcement status, acquired assets and purchase consideration before counting deals or comparing buyers.

Two transactions announced in the third quarter of 2026 show why these fields belong in different columns. Goldman Sachs agreed to buy NEOS Investments, an ETF manager. Corient announced that Summit Trail Advisors, a wealth-management RIA, would join its business. They are useful examples of different acquisition structures, rather than a comparable sample of wealth-management firms.

This is a review of selected primary announcements checked on October 14, 2026. It is not a census of quarterly RIA deals, a ranking of acquirers or an estimate of money available for new investments.

What the Goldman Sachs announcement actually measures

Goldman Sachs' August 12 announcement described an agreement to acquire NEOS. It reported approximately $30 billion managed across NEOS ETFs as of June 30, 2026. The announcement separately specified consideration capped at $2.25 billion, payable in cash and equity and contingent on performance or service commitments. Its expected closing period was the first quarter of 2027, subject to approvals and other conditions.

Those numbers answer different questions. The managed assets describe the investment business. The consideration describes the acquisition terms. Neither should be relabelled as fresh capital raised by a private fund.

The NEOS shareholder-vote page, checked on October 14, still describes a proposed acquisition and a required shareholder approval process. It identifies November 2, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time as the voting deadline. That page supports retaining a pending-status flag; it does not establish that closing has occurred.

For a research ledger, keep the August announcement and the later vote notice linked to one proposed transaction. A new document can update an event without creating another acquisition to count.

What the Corient example adds

Corient's August 5 announcement said Summit Trail Advisors would join Corient. It described Summit Trail as an adviser managing more than $21 billion for individuals, families and institutions. The release's headline used $21 billion; the body used the qualifying phrase “more than.” Preserve the qualification when using the body figure.

Treat purchase consideration and a later closing date as unverified in this review. Do not enter zero, infer a revenue multiple or substitute managed assets for an unverified price. Before describing the transaction as completed, obtain and record a completion notice rather than relying on the announcement's forward-looking wording.

The Corient public profile and Goldman Sachs public profile provide related entity context. The transaction facts in this article come from the original announcements, not from those profiles.

Build an event ledger before a quarterly total

Altss's proposed research framework starts with identity and status. Record buyer, target, announced action and the exact source supporting it. Give an event its own identifier so a regulatory filing, press release and later completion notice can remain evidence for one transaction.

Next, separate the dates. Keep announcement date, expected completion period, confirmed completion date and verification date in distinct fields. A transaction can belong to an announcement-quarter analysis while remaining outside a completed-deals analysis for that quarter. Define which population you are reporting before calculating a total.

Then separate the measures. Retain the source's asset label, currency, qualification and measurement date. Place acquisition consideration in another field, including contingencies. An ETF asset-management business and an advisory business serving families should not become interchangeable observations merely because both announcements contain an asset figure.

Finally, keep an explicit exclusion log. Identify whether your project includes ETF managers, wealth advisers, minority investments, adviser-team moves or only whole-company acquisitions. Treat these as methodological choices. Do not silently broaden a sample to make it resemble another publisher's headline.

For regulatory context, Form ADV is a separate research starting point. Before using a filing figure, check its definition and reporting date against the announcement. A matching company name alone is insufficient evidence that two asset measures are equivalent.

What capital-raising teams should investigate next

Use an acquisition announcement to frame questions, rather than to assume an allocation opportunity. Has the combined business published a change to investment governance? Is there an official update to research responsibility, manager onboarding or the relevant investment platform? Can the source distinguish a planned change from an implemented one?

Keep unanswered questions visible. Neither selected acquisition announcement establishes a current open mandate for a private-market manager. A useful outreach thesis needs additional, dated evidence relevant to the strategy being proposed.

This approach follows the distinction between source evidence and interpretation in Altss's methodology. It also makes the report easier to update: change the affected status or measure when new evidence arrives, while preserving the original announcement.

Frequently asked questions

Does acquired AUM equal the purchase price?

No. In the NEOS announcement, the reported managed assets and conditional consideration are separate measures. Use the precise labels and dates attached to each.

Does an announced deal count as completed?

Only if the scope of your analysis is announced deals. A completed-deals series needs evidence of completion. Do not use one label for both populations.

Can these two examples establish Q3 market activity?

No. They were selected to illustrate research distinctions. They do not establish a market total, median deal size or the most active acquirer.

Does an acquisition create an open private-fund mandate?

The announcements reviewed here do not establish one. Look for a separate official mandate, selection process or investment decision before making that claim.

Public records carry source-specific dates where available. No population-wide measured refresh cadence or universal verification deadline is established here. Page modified, source captured, fact observed, entity verified and aggregate measured describe different events. Check the date attached to the relevant claim; a missing verification date means unknown. Stored source history does not establish a customer-facing historical-analysis interface.
