The Aalto University Endowment was established in 2010 under the Aalto University Foundation to manage long-term capital. Its mandate centers on generating predictable returns that cover roughly 9% of the university's annual budget. The portfolio spans private equity at a 14% current allocation, hedge funds, commodities, infrastructure, and real estate. Confirmed holdings include the Hamilton Lane Aalto Fund, Brevan Howard Fund Limited, and campus assets such as Töölö Towers in Helsinki. Geographic exposure centers on Finland and global markets through Luxembourg-domiciled vehicles. The endowment also maintains minority stakes in operating companies including Aalto University Executive Education Ltd and Funidata Oy. The team reports to the Investment Committee chaired by Hanna Hiidenpalo. Lauri Ström serves as Head of Investments. The endowment participates in events including the 2024 Aalto University Investment Summit and the 2025 Aalto Startup Center Demo Day. It holds signatory status with the Principles for Responsible Investment since 2021 and maintains memberships in FINSIF and the Standards Board for Alternative Investments. Governance flows through the Aalto University Foundation, which separates endowment management from direct university operations while retaining oversight of investment policy and distributions.
