Nicolai Tangen launched the AKO Foundation in 2013 after building AKO Capital into a London-based hedge fund. The foundation receives its capital from the firm's profits and functions as its dedicated philanthropic arm. Tangen and his wife Katja signed the Giving Pledge in 2019, committing to give the majority of their wealth to charitable causes. The foundation allocates capital across grants in education, arts and climate emergency work. Its balance sheet includes management shares in AKO Capital and AKO Global funds valued at hundreds of millions of pounds, a venture portfolio, short-term fixed income holdings and The Tangen Collection of Nordic modernist art now housed at Kunstsilo Museum in Norway. Geographic reach covers the UK, Norway and selected global education and climate initiatives. Confirmed recipients include the Wharton School, ClientEarth and Educate Girls. The foundation lists eight professionals on its trustee and executive roster and maintains relationships with AKO Capital for investment advice and PwC for audit services. It participates in the World Economic Forum and Wharton Global Forum as a speaker on investment and philanthropy topics. No operational changes or new grant announcements appear in the last 24 months. The foundation's architecture separates grant-making authority from AKO Capital's investment committee while drawing funding directly from the hedge fund's performance. This creates a closed-loop model in which investment returns flow into a distinct charitable vehicle without external LP capital or co-investment syndicates.
