The group pursues direct equity co-investments alongside private equity sponsors, buys limited partner interests in private equity and credit funds, and provides mezzanine debt and preferred equity to middle-market and large-cap companies. Its sector appetite tilts toward industries where Bank of America's investment banking franchise has strong advisory relationships, including financial services, healthcare, technology, and industrial businesses.

The Volcker Rule restricts proprietary trading and limits bank investments in private equity and hedge funds to no more than 3% of the fund's total capital and 3% of the bank's Tier 1 capital. BAML Global Principal Investments structures its commitments to comply with these thresholds, operating within a regulatory framework that constrains the scale but not the existence of bank-affiliated principal investing.
