Birch Hill was originally TD Capital's private equity division. In 1994, the senior investment team executed a management buyout and established Birch Hill as an independent partnership. The firm has had no operational or ownership ties to TD Bank since the spinout, operating as a standalone institution with its own institutional limited partners.

Birch Hill targets Canadian mid-market companies that require equity investments between C$20 million and C$100 million. The firm pursues control positions across buyouts, corporate divestitures, management-led successions, and recapitalizations. Birch Hill has publicly emphasized its willingness to invest in founder-led businesses seeking a long-term capital partner rather than a traditional 3-to-5-year exit.

Birch Hill distinguishes itself by holding portfolio companies significantly longer than the industry average. The firm held Softchoice for over a decade before its 2023 exit to World Wide Technology. Its partnership structure and institutional LP base are built to support decade-plus hold periods, a structural feature the founding team designed after the spinout from TD Capital.

Birch Hill invests exclusively in Canadian companies. Its mandate covers all provinces and sectors within Canada, and the firm has publicly communicated this national focus as a core differentiator. It does not pursue cross-border buyouts or international platform strategies.

The firm raises its fund capital from Canada's largest institutional investors, including major public pension plans, university endowments, and other domestic pools of patient capital. Stable institutional LP relationships across multiple fund generations underpin the firm's long-hold approach.
