Andrew Carnegie established the institution in 1902 with an initial gift of $10 million in U.S. Steel bonds. The endowment continues to fund fundamental research in astronomy, Earth science, genetics, and plant biology without teaching obligations. The endowment allocates across public equities, hedge funds, private equity, real estate, and natural resources. Confirmed positions include holdings in Longleaf Partners Funds and commitments to TA XII. Geographic exposure centers on the United States and Chile, where the institution owns and operates the twin Magellan Telescopes and additional instruments at Las Campanas Observatory. Direct ownership of research campuses in Washington, Pasadena, Stanford, and Baltimore supplements these financial assets. The organization employs 457 staff. Additional offices operate in Pasadena and at Stanford and Johns Hopkins campuses. In November 2024 John Mulchaey became president. The endowment retains Cambridge Associates as investment consultant and KPMG as auditor. Governance separates the scientific mission from investment execution through a board chaired by Suzanne Nora Johnson and a dedicated chief investment officer. This structure allows the endowment to maintain long-duration holdings in telescopes, plate archives, and laboratory facilities that commercial managers rarely retain.
