Groton School Endowment

Groton School opened in 1884 as a college-preparatory boarding and day school in Groton, Massachusetts. Temba T. Maqubela serves as headmaster and has led the GRAIN initiative since 2014 to expand need-blind admissions and contain tuition. The endowment, managed under the Trustees of Groton School, holds title to the core campus and related real assets. The portfolio mixes direct real estate ownership with commitments to external managers. Confirmed holdings include interests in Frazier Healthcare Growth Buyout Fund X, Frazier Life Sciences IX, General Atlantic Partners funds, and Commonfund Private Equity VII. Geographic reach centers on the United States with additional exposure through global technology partnerships. The endowment also maintains the John B. Goodenough '40 Solar Battery Farm and Sunset Farm property. Cambridge Associates provides investment advisory services and State Street Bank and Trust Company acts as custodian. PwC has served as auditor since at least 2010. In June 2024 the school dedicated the Maqubela Track and Field Complex after completing an $8.7 million capital campaign. The Groton School Foundation and GRAIN vehicle channel philanthropic inflows that have exceeded $100 million for endowment and aid. Governance rests with the Board of Trustees chaired by Benjamin N. Pyne, with day-to-day financial oversight by CFO Jay Herlihy and Treasurer Nathaniel A. Bristol. This structure keeps investment decisions inside the school rather than through a separate external family office or multi-client platform.
