Infinera

Nokia acquired Infinera in a transaction that closed in 2024. The business now operates as Nokia's optical networks division, with the combined portfolio retaining Infinera's coherent engine line under Nokia branding.

The active embedded engine generation is PSE-6s, capable of 1.2Tbps per wavelength, with ICE6 still deployed on legacy platforms. Coherent pluggable families include ICE-X 100G/400G and the newer ICE-X 800G, which targets 800G ZR/ZR+ for data-center interconnect.

AI workloads require high-bandwidth, low-latency connectivity between data centers. Infinera provides power-efficient intra-data-center optics under the ICE-D brand, thin transponder layer sleds for compact deployments, and subsea cable systems that connect training clusters across continents — exemplified by the Medusa cable in Europe and North Africa.

The 1830 family couples multi-rail open line systems with Infinera's own coherent DSPs and photonic components, giving Nokia control over the full signal chain rather than relying on external merchant silicon. This vertical integration is uncommon among optical vendors that typically buy third-party DSPs.

Infinera's customer base spans telecommunications carriers, internet exchange operators like DE-CIX, subsea cable consortia, and data-center operators such as Digital Realty. The automation suites — WaveSuite and Transcend — layer on operator-grade network control, which favors carrier and wholesale deployments.
