Willy Messerschmitt, the engineer behind the Bf 109 and Me 262, created the Munich-based foundation to pursue a dual mandate: advancing aerospace research and preserving German art and cultural monuments at home and abroad. The foundation has since become the largest private entity of its kind in Germany, steered by Chairman Dr. Hans Heinrich von Srbik alongside a board selected for deep technical expertise. Its wealth originates from Messerschmitt's aviation enterprises and subsequent industrial holdings. The foundation deploys capital almost exclusively into historic real assets. Its portfolio spans luxury hotels, castles, and commercial properties concentrated in Germany, Austria, and Romania — including the Baroque Schloss Meseberg, which has served as the official guesthouse of the German Federal Government since 2007, and the Orlando Block on Munich's Platzl, acquired in 1997. Beyond hospitality, the endowment maintains the Flugmuseum Messerschmitt in Manching, housing airworthy replicas and original warbirds such as the Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-4 and the Me 262 B1-A, alongside a property portfolio that includes Schloss Leitheim and its four-star superior hotel. The foundation's holdings stretch from East Tyrol — Schloss Anras, operated as a cultural venue and holiday apartments since the 1990s — to Sighisoara, Romania, where the "House with the Antler" was restored between 2001 and 2004 and now operates as a hotel. In October 2020 it consolidated full ownership of the historic restaurant at Hotel Messerschmitt Bamberg. The strategy does not appear to involve third-party fund commitments or co-investment club structures; every asset is held directly and managed for both cultural preservation and commercial hospitality use. The foundation's structural distinction lies in its fusion of a cultural mandate with a commercially operated hospitality portfolio. Unlike most endowments that hold financial securities, the Messerschmitt Stiftung directly owns and manages operating businesses — hotels, guesthouses, and tourist venues — where the real estate itself is the protected monument. This creates a feedback loop in which hospitality revenue funds ongoing restoration, while preservation status enhances the properties' market positioning.
