Nazarbayev University was founded in 2010 alongside its endowment, the New Generation Fund, drawing on wealth accumulated by former President Nursultan Nazarbayev. The fund is registered in the United States but operates primarily within Kazakhstan, backing the Nazarbayev University and Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools systems. Founding President Shigeo Katsu and former Deputy PM Yerbol Orynbayev shaped its initial architecture, which was explicitly designed to mirror the endowments of leading research universities abroad. The endowment's deployment is concentrated in a cluster of legacy assets rather than a traditional diversified portfolio. Its largest holdings are controlling interests in financial and technology entities: Jusan Bank, Jusan Technologies, and Jysan Holding. The real asset bucket includes commercial shopping malls, industrial warehouses, and a pasta factory, all within Kazakhstan. The fund also holds a state bonds portfolio, cash equivalents, and a private jet. While the university markets itself as a research institution, the endowment's asset mix reflects a strategy closer to a holding company for a national leader's commercial interests — direct control of operating businesses generating cash flow for the educational mission. Team composition is fluid and tied to the broader Nazarbayev network. Galymzhan Yessenov, a Kazakh oligarch, regained control of Jusan Bank through a 2023 settlement, altering the endowment's governance relationship with one of its primary assets. Ron Wahid chairs Jusan Technologies and runs RJI Capital, while Lord David Evans of Watford serves as a director of Jusan Technologies Ltd. The endowment operates without a publicly disclosed AUM, using corporate and real estate vehicles to support the university's operations. No additional offices beyond Astana are documented. Structurally, the endowment functions as a sovereign-wealth-adjacent vehicle, not a pure academic endowment. Its fortunes are directly tied to the political and legal outcomes of the Nazarbayev family's commercial empire. The separation between the university's governing council, chaired by Aslan Sarinzhipov, and the operational control of the endowment's underlying assets remains opaque. This hybrid model means the university's long-term funding stability is not anchored to a broadly diversified market portfolio but to the success and legal standing of Nazarbayev-era holdings.
