OBI SQUARED operates as a captive corporate venture unit, not a standalone fund. It deploys capital directly from the OBI Group balance sheet and is integrated into the parent's strategic apparatus rather than functioning as a financially independent GP raising outside capital.

OBI SQUARED targets early-stage and growth-stage startups in PropTech, ClimateTech, circular economy, and supportive home services. The thesis centers on technologies that decarbonize, digitize, or service-enable the residential built environment — areas directly adjacent to OBI's core building-materials and home-improvement franchise.

The firm provides portfolio companies with distribution through OBI's 675-store network across nine European countries, brand amplification via one of the continent's best-known home-improvement platforms, and access to OBI's supply chain and customer base. This commercial pathway is positioned as a primary value proposition, distinct from purely financial returns.

The firm's geographic focus is German-speaking Europe and adjacent markets where OBI maintains retail operations. However, it can invest on a pan-European basis when technologies are deployable into OBI's core markets, which includes Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Slovenia.

The firm does not publicly name its investment committee or managing partners. The parent group, originally part of the Tengelmann retail conglomerate, operates OBI SQUARED as an internal unit, and lead decision-makers have not been disclosed in public-facing materials.
