Ouster

Ouster sells digital lidar sensors and a unified software platform for perception. Buyers include autonomous-vehicle developers, mining operators, robotics companies, and smart-city integrators. Komatsu is a named industrial customer, using Ouster hardware for autonomous haulage in harsh mining environments.

Conventional lidar systems typically use spinning analog components and may handle color as a separate, software-aligned data stream. Ouster fuses color and 3D depth data directly in silicon on its L4 and REV8 sensor families. This avoids the latency and spatial misalignment introduced by post-processing, which is critical for real-time safety applications.

Ouster designs its REV8 family for ASIL-B, SIL-2, and PLd functional-safety certifications. These are automotive and industrial safety-integrity levels that govern how a system must behave when components fail. The certification targets align with use cases in autonomous driving and heavy machinery.

Ouster acquired the sensor business of legacy lidar maker Velodyne. The company now provides technical support and RMA services for Velodyne-branded sensors through its help center alongside its own product lines. The acquisition consolidated two of the earliest commercial lidar franchises under one roof.

Ouster sells both. Its platform includes digital lidar sensors, complementary cameras, and a software stack with open-source Python and C++ libraries, firmware, and developer tools. The company markets these together as a unified sensing and perception platform for physical AI applications.
