Qutoutiao Inc. was founded in 2016 by Eric Yi Wei Zhang and Li Wang, who previously worked at Alibaba and China Mobile respectively. The company built a mobile-first content platform that used AI-driven recommendations and a reward system for user engagement, targeting lower-tier Chinese cities. Fundamentally, Qutoutiao charged advertisers to place sponsored content within its news feeds and also generated revenue through e-commerce referrals and games.
