Strategic direction is set by founder Peter Sondakh as Chairman and CEO. The hospitality and real estate division, which constitutes the most visible part of the current portfolio, is run by Vice Chairman Shirley Tan, who serves as CEO of Rajawali Property Group. The next generation is represented by Sondakh's daughter Claudia, whose marriage to Evan Kwee of Singapore's Pontiac Land Group suggests close alignment between two family real estate dynasties.

Peter Sondakh began with a taxi business and expanded aggressively through the deregulation of the Indonesian economy in the 1980s. Early wealth came from coal mining concessions and infrastructure contracts, which provided the capital to co-found RCTI, Indonesia's first private television station, alongside Bambang Trihatmodjo. The family later exited media, recycling proceeds into plantations, mining, and hospitality.

It operates as a hybrid. Rajawali functions as the Sondakh family's private investment vehicle but retains the characteristics of an active operating conglomerate, directly developing and managing hotels, mines, and plantations. The family ownership structure keeps ultimate control private, while hotel operations are managed through brand licensing agreements with Marriott International.

The firm prefers full ownership and control of its core hospitality and resource assets rather than minority co-investments. The hotel portfolio is exclusively owned and developed by the family, with operators like Marriott providing brand flags and management. In plantations and mining, the group also maintains majority or wholly owned operational stakes.

The portfolio is concentrated in Indonesia and Malaysia. In Indonesia, key sites include Jakarta, Bali, and Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara. In Malaysia, the family owns trophy hospitality assets on the island of Langkawi and in downtown Kuala Lumpur, including the Sheraton Imperial Hotel.

Philanthropy is conducted through the Rajawali Foundation, a separate legal entity focused on education and social welfare initiatives in Indonesia. The foundation is distinct from the corporation's commercial operations, although both ultimately reflect the Sondakh family's broader capital allocation priorities.

Rajawali's model is built almost entirely on direct ownership of operating businesses and real estate. There is no public record of significant commitments as a limited partner in external private equity, venture capital, or hedge funds. Capital is deployed into assets the family can control and develop directly.
