Rollins College was established in Winter Park, Florida in 1885. Its endowment supplies funding for scholarships and academic programs. The Harold Alfond Foundation has provided major grants including $12.5 million toward construction of The Alfond Inn. The endowment holds direct positions in commercial real estate including SunTrust Plaza, Winter Park Plaza acquired in 2012 for $2.8 million, and the Samuel B. Lawrence Center. It maintains limited partner commitments to Spark Capital, Summit Partners, TCV and Apax Partners. Geographic exposure centers on the United States with additional commitments routed through United Kingdom-based managers. A student-managed portfolio within the endowment holds Johnson & Johnson equity. The endowment lists 485 million dollars under management. It employs external advisors including DePrince Race & Zollo for investment management and Harbert Realty Services for real estate. In October 2024 trustees attended the Hedgeweek US Digital Assets Summit. The Alfond Inn generates net operating income that funds the Alfond Scholars Program. Direct ownership of operating real estate and art collections distinguishes the endowment from peers that rely solely on external managers. The structure ties investment returns to campus-adjacent properties and named-donor collections rather than a conventional outsourced mandate.
