Russell Medical Center opened in 1923 in Alexander City, Alabama, founded as a community hospital to serve the region's growing textile and manufacturing workforce. A century later, the institution remains a not-for-profit, acute care facility but now operates under a management agreement with the UAB Health System, finalized in January 2020. Under former CEO Jim Peace, who retired in March 2026, the hospital deepened ties to local philanthropic capital — notably from Russell Lands, which donated $3.2 million in 2025, and the Adelia Russell Charitable Foundation. March 2026: Bob Phillips succeeded the retiring Jim Peace as President and CEO, marking a leadership transition at the century-old institution. The hospital extends well beyond its main campus on Highway 280 through satellite clinics in Dadeville and Goodwater, while its foundation arm — the Russell Medical Center Foundation — stewards an eclectic portfolio that includes the Mill 280 Event Center, a rental real estate portfolio, professional office buildings, and even a hospital art collection featuring the John Denney Photography Collection. Russell Medical Center's structural differentiator is its hybrid posture. It operates as a standalone community nonprofit governed by the Russell Hospital Corporation board, chaired by Hugh Neighbors, yet its 2020 membership in the UAB Health System ties it strategically to one of the South's major academic medical centers. The arrangement preserves local governance while granting access to UAB's clinical resources and operational scale. The hospital's foundation also maintains an unconventional asset portfolio — commercial real estate, event venues, and art — that diversifies its revenue beyond patient care. Its network extends further through directors like Foundation Director Bodine, who concurrently serves as a Venture Partner at NewSpring Capital, creating a bridge between regional healthcare governance and growth-equity investing.
