The Ryobi Foundation was established in 1980 by John G. Powers and Kimiko Powers. John G. Powers previously headed Prentice Hall and served as a director of Ryobi Limited in Japan. The foundation maintains the Powers Art Center, a 15,000 sq. ft. museum designed by Hiroshi Nanamori, and the surrounding ranch land conserved in partnership with the Aspen Valley Land Trust. The foundation holds direct ownership of real estate parcels totaling over 150 acres in Carbondale and the John and Kimiko Powers art collection, valued in part at $34.6 million. Confirmed holdings include over 400 Jasper Johns prints, Andy Warhol screen prints, works by Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Rauschenberg, plus Japanese art and modernist furniture.
