Sawmill Angels operates strictly as an angel network. It is not a family office or a professionally managed venture capital fund. The group, also known as the Rose Angel Network, pools deal flow rather than capital, with each member making independent investment decisions after a shared vetting process.

Deal flow is exclusively tied to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology ecosystem. Entrepreneurs with Rose-Hulman roots apply directly to pitch, and the network's investment committee vets them. A startup must secure a formal sponsorship from an existing Angel member before it can present at a pitch meeting, meaning sourcing is a combination of inbound applications and personal network activation.

Investment decisions are entirely decentralized. After a startup pitches to the full group, each individual Angel decides personally whether to invest their own capital. The network has no pooled fund, and there is no requirement for any member to participate in a specific deal, which distinguishes the model from a managed fund's investment committee.

Sawmill Angels was founded by Rose-Hulman alumni and restricts its membership and deal flow to the Rose-Hulman community, including alumni, faculty, staff, and their family members.
