Spark Centre

Spark Centre does not operate a traditional fund with a CIO or managing partner making allocation decisions. Programs are overseen by an executive director and governed by a board of directors drawn from Durham Region business, academic, and municipal leadership. Investment decisions, where applicable, are made through affiliated programs or partner funds rather than an internal investment committee.

Spark Centre sources deal flow through its position as the primary Regional Innovation Centre for Durham Region. Founders apply via the centre's intake process, which funnels accepted ventures into advisory and acceleration tracks. The centre also receives referrals from Ontario's provincial innovation network and local post-secondary institutions, including Ontario Tech University and Durham College.

Neither. Spark Centre is a not-for-profit Regional Innovation Centre funded primarily by provincial and federal economic development grants. It operates as a startup accelerator and advisory hub, not a private investment fund. Its capital support for portfolio companies typically involves facilitating access to third-party seed funding rather than deploying its own balance sheet.

Spark Centre does not allocate to external funds. Its model is client-facing — advising individual startups and connecting them to angel investors, seed funds, and government granting programs. The centre itself does not invest as a limited partner in other venture capital funds.

Spark Centre focuses on very early stage — pre-seed and seed — companies that have not yet raised institutional venture capital. Entrepreneurs accepted into its programs are typically pre-revenue or in early product validation, seeking initial mentorship and introductions to first-check angel investors or government innovation grants.
