Yuresh Maharaj, Chief Executive of Insurance & Asset Management, oversees the group's asset management, insurance, and wealth businesses. He reports to Group CEO Sim Tshabalala. The unit operates with a multi-boutique structure that gives heads of equities, fixed income, and alternatives discretion within centrally set risk limits.

Deal flow originates through the bank's 20-country corporate and investment banking network, which often serves as mandated lead arranger before an asset migrates to the asset management book. The firm also co-invests alongside third-party fund managers like African Infrastructure Investment Managers, particularly in digital-infrastructure platforms and renewable-energy projects.

It is neither. Standard Bank Group is a publicly traded universal bank whose Insurance & Asset Management division functions as a large institutional asset manager. The group also operates Standard Bank Wealth and Investment for private clients, but that is a line of business within the bank rather than a structurally separate family office.

The asset management unit commits to third-party private-equity and infrastructure funds, particularly those raised by managers with whom the bank has co-invested historically. The direct deal book skews toward infrastructure credit and real estate, while fund commitments provide access to venture-stage and growth-equity exposure elsewhere on the continent.

Liberty Two Degrees, or L2D, is a South African REIT majority-owned by Standard Bank's insurance subsidiaries. It holds a concentrated portfolio of super-regional malls and office assets, including Sandton City in Johannesburg. L2D functions as the group's primary vehicle for listed-property exposure.

The Insurance & Asset Management unit operates under its own regulatory licenses and maintains separate capital reserves. The investment teams have a dual reporting line to the unit CEO and to group risk, with ring-fenced mandates that prevent the bank's proprietary trading desk from front-running the asset management book.

Standard Bank is one of Africa's largest renewable-energy financiers. The asset management unit participates in the South African Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme and has taken equity positions in projects including the Lake Turkana Wind Power farm in Kenya, where the bank was a mandated lead arranger.
