Michael Helmstetter, the founder, serves as President and CEO and leads investment decisions. He brought two decades of experience from MRIGlobal, a not-for-profit contract research organization, where he had overseen agriculture and life-sciences programs. The firm operates with a lean senior team that makes consensus calls on which university technologies to license and fund.

The firm does not rely on conventional inbound pitch decks. It maintains active relationships with university tech-transfer offices, particularly at land-grant institutions in the Midwest, and proactively scans invention disclosures in crop science, biologicals, and animal health. Once it identifies a promising technology, TechAccel negotiates an exclusive license and funds the proof-of-concept work internally before recruiting a management team to spin out the new company.

It is a hybrid. The core entity functions as an investment firm that launches and funds startups, but it also operates wholly owned subsidiaries like Reliance Animal Health, which sells pet-health products directly to consumers. That structure allows TechAccel to capture both equity upside from venture creation and operating income from commercialization.

TechAccel invests at the very earliest stage — often pre-revenue and pre-management team. The firm licenses a technology, funds the translational science, files provisional patents, and only then recruits a CEO to run the startup. It will continue to provide follow-on capital as the company matures toward a Series A or trade sale.

The firm stays within agriculture, animal health, and biologicals, and does not invest in human therapeutics, medical devices, or general enterprise software. It avoids sectors outside its scientific competency and institutional network, which are concentrated in crop science and veterinary medicine.
