The Cullen Foundation was established in 1947 by Hugh Roy Cullen and his wife Lillie C. Cullen. The original endowment consisted of working interests in roughly 20,000 acres of Texas oil and gas properties. Successive generations have preserved the philanthropic mandate while adding real-estate holdings such as the Cullen Center complex and the 500 Jefferson Building in downtown Houston.
