He sold his roughly 50% stake in the airline to Lufthansa in stages — a deal valued at roughly £318 million by its 2009 completion — and subsequently dedicated a portion of that wealth to structured philanthropy. The foundation channels the bulk of its giving to UK-registered charities with an emphasis on cultural preservation and social equity. It maintains a separate but related entity, The Glendonbrook Foundation, which forms part of Bishop's broader philanthropic architecture. Grant-making is split across four pillars: heritage, arts and culture; education; health and medicine; and human rights and social justice. The foundation does not operate its own programs but rather reviews applications from established UK charities during two annual windows — March and September. The giving pattern reflects Bishop's personal history: he funded a long-term scholarship at Jesus College, Cambridge, his alma mater, and has been a major donor to the Conservative Party. Holdings beyond the foundation's charitable corpus include Bruern Abbey, a historic Grade I-listed Palladian house in West Oxfordshire acquired through his Bruern Abbey Investments vehicle, and a residential property in Darling Point, Sydney. Governance rests with a small trustee board. Joanne Furlong and Jonathan Elliott joined the board as trustees in June 2025, serving alongside long-term business partner Martin Ritchie, who has been a trustee and senior advisor to Bishop for decades. The foundation operates with a lean structure — typical for a UK grant-giving vehicle that does not run programmatic activities. No dedicated investment team is evident; the trustee board governs fund distribution rather than asset management. The foundation's structural differentiator is its separation from Bishop's commercial interests while remaining tightly tied to a single life peer. Unlike multi-generational families that professionalize into a full family office, the wealth here flows through a traditional charitable trust with limited disclosed assets. Bishop sits in the House of Lords as a life peer since 2011, and his political and alumni networks — including the Conservative Party and the Old Millhillians Club — inform the foundation's governance circle if not its specific funding decisions.
