Old College Capital targets early-stage and spinout companies emerging from the university’s research base, with a focus that spans AI/ML, life sciences, climate technology, and digital health. The university co-founded the Responsible Investment Network – Universities alongside Cambridge and Oxford, embedding ESG screening across the portfolio. Real estate holdings include mixed-use, commercial, and residential assets across Scotland, along with a stake in the Hermes Property Unit Trust. The university also maintains an airbone research fleet, though it is unclear whether this is a financial asset or a purely operational one. Total investment assets are not publicly disclosed. Altss estimates the pool at roughly $770 million, placing it in the mid-tier of UK university endowments. The university's investment governance is embedded within its larger financial administration, which also oversees the Development Trust and its US-registered counterpart. Philanthropic activity runs in parallel through partnerships with Big Issue Invest and Social Investment Scotland, rather than through a separate grant-making foundation. No recent fund closes or new vehicle launches were publicly verifiable as of mid-2026. Edinburgh’s structural differentiator lies in its model of anchoring venture investing inside the university’s own commercialisation arm rather than farming it out to external GPs. Edinburgh Innovations sits at the boundary of academic research and asset management, giving the endowment first-refusal visibility into spinouts from one of the UK's largest research universities.
