Unlike the separate University of Illinois Foundation, this pool combines legacy gifts and a portion of system operating cash into a single long-term investment vehicle. Geri Melchiorre directs the investment team as Senior Director of Investments, with Misty Lockhart managing investment operations. The portfolio spans venture capital and private equity — including buyout, growth, early-stage, and distressed strategies — alongside direct co-investments and fund-of-funds commitments. Tangible assets form a distinguishing pillar: the pool holds a dedicated Endowment Farmland Portfolio across Champaign, McLean, and surrounding Illinois counties, and privately owns the University of Illinois Research Park, a 200-acre mixed-use development in Champaign master-developed by Fox/Atkins Development, LLC. GEM Realty Capital owns a significant building portfolio within the park. The office also manages a cryptocurrency donation program and a Diversifying Strategies Portfolio. The pool is estimated at approximately $1.1 billion (Altss estimate). It participates in professional networks including the Intentional Endowments Network, where it serves on the steering committee for sustainable investing initiatives, as well as NACUBO and CASE. The parent University of Illinois System spans three universities, a healthcare enterprise, and more than $1 billion in annual R&D expenditures, with the endowment providing a growing funding stream for system operations. Where many university endowments separate financial assets from operating real estate, the Illinois pool directly holds farmland and a commercial research park — creating a hybrid public-endowment posture that blends traditional portfolio management with direct, in-state asset ownership and development partnerships.
