Founded alongside the university in 1848, the University of Ottawa Endowment provides perpetual financial support for education and research. The endowment is managed by the University’s Pension Fund and Investment Management Group, with investment oversight historically linked to former Chief Investment Officer Tom Valks, who retired in 2024. The endowment deploys capital across several asset classes, including equities, fixed income, commodities, and direct real estate holdings. On the equities side, the Telfer Capital Markets Program manages a $300,000 portfolio backed by the endowment, providing students with hands-on investment experience. Real estate assets include residential properties such as 90 University Residence, Brooks Residence, Hyman-Soloway Residence, and the Thompson, Stanton, Marchand, and Leblanc residences, all in Ottawa. The portfolio also includes exposure to commodities. The endowment is a signatory to the UN Principles for Responsible Investment since 2012 and the Montreal Carbon Pledge, committing to measure and disclose its portfolio carbon footprint. It participates in the Intentional Endowments Network. The endowment is linked to major donors such as Ian Telfer, former CEO of Goldcorp and namesake of the Telfer School of Management. In 2024, Tom Valks retired as Chief Investment Officer, leaving the current investment leadership publicly unidentified. The endowment is structurally intertwined with the University's broader financial operations and pension management, rather than operating as an independent investment office. Its governance is directly tied to the university's administration, and its philanthropic mission is embedded within the institution's academic and student-focused initiatives.
