The Largest Asset Managers in Europe
Amundi manages €2,380bn as of year-end 2025, making Paris home to Europe's largest asset manager — and insurers and banks own most of the rest of the top ten.
Largest: Amundi (€2,380bn, year-end 2025) · European institutional assets: €12.2trn at end-2025 · Top 10 managers hold nearly half of European institutional AUM
An asset manager invests client money across public and private markets, earning fees on the assets it oversees — and in Europe, the biggest are mostly bank- and insurer-owned platforms. Amundi leads at €2,380bn as of 31 December 2025 after drawing €88bn of inflows on the year, per the firm's full-year results. Allianz follows with €2,043bn of third-party assets, a figure that spans PIMCO in the US as well as Allianz Global Investors, and UBS Asset Management runs $2.1 trillion inside a group with more than $7 trillion of invested assets. BNP Paribas Asset Management passed €1.6 trillion after absorbing AXA Investment Managers in mid-2025, and Legal & General manages £1.177 trillion, anchored in index and liability-driven strategies. The ranking is compiled from each firm's own reported figures: results releases, factsheets, and filings.
The structural story is consolidation. BNP Paribas' takeover of AXA IM created a second French giant behind Amundi and pushed roughly €300bn of alternatives under one roof, Europe's largest such book. Ownership shapes the whole table: Allianz, Generali, and Swiss Life run insurance-linked platforms; DWS answers to Deutsche Bank; and Natixis assembles more than fifteen affiliate managers into one $1.45 trillion federation. That leaves the UK independents — Schroders, back to organic growth with £11.2bn of net new business in 2025, and abrdn and M&G rebuilding — competing against balance-sheet-backed scale. Two caveats apply when reading the numbers: firms disclose a mix of total, third-party, and institutional assets in different currencies and at different dates, so close ranks are approximate. Insight Investment appears with its US parent noted, since BNY owns the London-based LDI leader.
European asset management is growing again, and faster at the top. Assets run for European institutional investors reached €12.2 trillion at the end of 2025, up 5.8% or about €670bn, ahead of the 4% global pace, per IPE's Top 500 survey. The ten largest managers of those assets control nearly half of them and grew 11% in 2025, against 1.6% for everyone else, so the concentration gap is widening rather than closing. The backdrop is a record global industry: the world's 500 largest managers oversaw $139.9 trillion at end-2024, up 9.4% on the year, with European firms accounting for $35.2 trillion of it. Scale, in other words, is compounding fastest where it already exists. Each firm below links to its Altss profile, where leadership, mandates, and activity are tracked.

Figures mix total, firm-wide, third-party, and institutional AUM at dates mostly between year-end 2025 and Q1 2026; currency conversions are approximate, and close ranks should be read as indicative. Scope is Europe-headquartered managers or divisions: Allianz's figure includes PIMCO's US operations, Insight Investment is owned by New York-based BNY, and some insurer- and bank-owned platforms include group assets. All figures come from firm disclosures rather than a single published league table.
How we rank Europe's managers
Firms are ordered by their latest disclosed total, firm-wide, or third-party AUM, compiled from results releases, factsheets, and filings. Most figures are as of year-end 2025 or the first quarter of 2026; industry context draws on IPE's Top 500 survey and the Thinking Ahead Institute.
Definitions differ — discretionary versus advisory assets, LDI and insurance capital, affiliate double-counting — so closely ranked firms are effectively tied. Original currencies are preferred over converted totals.
