# Altss vs Preqin

By Altss April 19, 2026 15 min read Competitor figures re-checked August 6, 2026

Preqin is the legacy institutional database for alternative assets, which became part of BlackRock via a $3.2 billion acquisition completed in March 2025. Altss is an OSINT-native allocator-intelligence platform: verified family-office and institutional-LP data plus a built-in CRM, AI-assisted outreach, a research copilot, an inbox with a meeting notetaker, Scouter, events and conference intelligence, and a relationship graph — built for fund managers raising from family offices and institutional allocators. Both have strengths; this page covers where each wins, honestly.

The short answer

Choose Altss when

You are raising from family offices or global allocators and need current contacts, mandate signals, and the outreach workflow in one place.

Choose Preqin when

You are benchmarking fund returns, researching how an institution allocated across vintages, or need credit and hedge-fund depth. Preqin's 20+ years of IRR, TVPI and DPI data is not something Altss replicates.

> Preqin has clear advantages in historical fund performance data, institutional LP coverage, and 20+ years of benchmarking depth across alternative assets. Altss leads in family office coverage, data freshness, allocator signals, a live 35M+ company dataset, and the workflow layer around the data: a built-in CRM and pipeline, AI-assisted outreach, a research copilot, an inbox with a meeting notetaker, Scouter, and a relationship graph. Preqin is a database you query and export. Altss pairs that verified data and those allocator signals with the workflow in one platform. Where you spend most of your fundraising time determines which platform delivers more value.

## What is Altss?

Altss is an OSINT-native allocator-intelligence platform built for managers raising capital in alternative assets. The data layer is OSINT-powered: instead of relying on self-reported survey data, Altss uses open-source intelligence — SEC filings (Form ADV, Form D, 13F), pension CAFRs, Form 990 and 990-PF for foundations, endowment annual reports, sovereign wealth fund disclosures, verified corporate registries, and published allocator statements — to build verified profiles of 9,000+ family offices and 150,000+ private-markets entities worldwide[9](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-9).

Public records carry source-specific dates where available. No population-wide measured refresh cadence or universal verification deadline is established here. Page modified, source captured, fact observed, entity verified and aggregate measured describe different events. Check the date attached to the relevant claim; a missing verification date means unknown. Stored source history does not establish a customer-facing historical-analysis interface.

Around that data sits the workflow: a built-in CRM and pipeline, AI-assisted outreach, a research copilot, an inbox with a meeting notetaker, Scouter for investor discovery, events and conference intelligence, and a relationship graph connecting LPs, GPs, and the people who move between them. Preqin is a database you query and export into other tools; Altss pairs the data with a built-in CRM, AI outreach, a research copilot, and a meeting notetaker in one platform.

Altss was built by former fund managers and OSINT specialists who experienced firsthand the inefficiency of legacy databases.

**Altss now runs a live 35M+ company dataset, including startups and VC-backed companies.** It completes the relationship graph: LPs → GPs → portfolio companies, all within a single OSINT-native platform.

## What is Preqin?

Preqin is a London-headquartered alternative assets data provider, founded in 2003. In March 2025, Preqin became part of BlackRock through a $3.2 billion acquisition[2](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-2) — one of the largest private capital data acquisitions in history. Preqin founder Mark O'Hare has since launched Valhalla Ventures, his own family office allocating 70% of its portfolio outside public markets. Preqin data is now being integrated into BlackRock's Aladdin ecosystem via eFront Insight.

Preqin pioneered the institutional LP database category and remains the most widely recognized provider of fund performance benchmarking in private equity, private debt, venture capital, hedge funds, infrastructure, real estate, and natural resources. Per Preqin's own 2025 coverage reports, the platform covers:

- **67,000+ fund managers** across 160+ countries[3](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-3)
- **170,000+ total entities** (investors, fund managers, placement agents, service providers, advisors)[6](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-6)
- **15,000+ private capital funds** with transparent return data[4](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-4)
- **30,000+ hedge funds** globally[4](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-4)
- **436,000+ service provider relationships**[3](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-3)
- **4,592 family offices** (per Preqin's 2024 "Fundraising from Family Offices" report, up 3x from 1,285 in 2019)[1](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-1)
- **500+ employees** across 16 global offices[4](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-4)
- **200,000+ professional users** rely on Preqin[5](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-5)

For LPs conducting due diligence on fund managers, Preqin's benchmarking data is difficult to match.

Preqin uses a combination of FOIA requests (which Preqin pioneered for collecting transparent fund return data), voluntary fund manager submissions, self-reported survey data, manual analyst research, and public filings. Contact and mandate data are updated via survey cycles; deal news and fund closes refresh more frequently.

### Family office coverage

Altss tracks **9,000+ family offices globally**[9](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-9). Preqin does not publish a current family-office count: its public Data Coverage Map breaks out investors, fund managers, service providers, consultants and funds, but has no family-office line item (read August 6, 2026)[6](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-6). The last figure Preqin published itself was **4,592**, in its 2024 "Fundraising from Family Offices" report, describing 2023 data[1](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-1). Treat that number as two years old, not as current coverage. Altss coverage extends beyond the top 200 U.S. names into European industrial families, Asian dynastic wealth, Middle Eastern family conglomerates, and emerging-market principal investors.

Preqin's family office coverage has historically been the weaker part of its dataset. The platform was built for institutional LPs and performs best there. Preqin's own data shows the segment tripled from 1,285 in 2019 to 4,592 in 2023[1](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-1), which is why a 2023 count is a poor guide to 2026 coverage on either side. If Preqin publishes a current figure, we will update this page and date it.

### Institutional LP coverage

Preqin's institutional LP database is deep — pensions, endowments, foundations, sovereign wealth funds, insurers — with 20+ years of allocation history. Altss covers 150,000+ private-markets entities with current mandate, personnel, and allocation signals, but does not match Preqin's historical depth on fund-level performance data.

### Geographic depth

Preqin has historically been strongest in North American institutional coverage. Altss has deliberately prioritized global family office depth — Asia, Middle East, and Europe — where Preqin's coverage is thinner.

## Data freshness

Personnel changes have source-specific timing. Review the published evidence and verification date rather than assuming a fixed update deadline.

Fund managers raising capital need current mandates, working emails, and accurate personnel information.

### Altss

- Public records carry source-specific dates where available.
- Continually updated on personnel changes, mandate shifts, and fund launches
- Every email is bounce-checked before appearing in the platform
- Every record is traceable to a public source with a verification timestamp

### Preqin

- Survey-based refresh for most contact and mandate fields
- Deal news and fund closes updated more frequently
- Self-reported contact data; no independent verification
- Contact and personnel data depends on firm proactively submitting updates

## Methodology: OSINT vs. self-reporting

The core methodological difference shapes everything downstream.

**Preqin's approach:** Survey-based plus manual analyst research, with FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) requests used to collect transparent fund return data — a methodology Preqin pioneered. Family offices and institutional LPs submit information via questionnaires. Preqin's analyst team supplements with public disclosures and industry research. Voluntary data contributions come from thousands of fund managers. This model produces deep historical data but struggles with currency — a family office that hasn't updated its Preqin profile in 18 months shows 18-month-old contact and mandate information.

**Altss's approach:** OSINT-first. Altss treats LP intelligence as an open-source intelligence problem. Data is sourced from SEC filings (Form ADV, Form D, 13F), state pension CAFRs, Form 990 and 990-PF for foundations, endowment annual reports, sovereign wealth fund disclosures, verified corporate registries, public news, and published statements. Every record is traceable to its public source and timestamped. Nothing relies on the allocator filling out a survey.

The practical difference: a personnel change can be reviewed through its source evidence and record date, whereas the same change might not appear in Preqin until the family office proactively updates its Preqin profile — which many private family offices never do.

## Pricing

### Altss

Published, and materially below Preqin's $51,500 average for LP-focused fundraising workflows[8](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-8). **Family Office Intelligence $15,000/year**, **Global Investor Intelligence $18,000**, **Full Market Intelligence $25,000**. One named user included; additional named users $5,000 each. **Altss Fundraising OS from $25,000/year** adds the investor CRM, AI outreach and meeting intelligence. Full detail is on the pricing page.

### Preqin

**Preqin (based on Vendr transaction data and customer reports, 2026):**

- Small teams (2–5 users, 1–2 asset classes): **$20,000–$50,000/year**[8](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-8)
- Mid-size teams (5–15 users, 2–4 asset classes): **$50,000–$120,000/year**[8](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-8)
- Larger enterprise deployments: **$120,000+/year**[8](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-8)
- Average per Vendr transaction data: **~$51,500/year**[8](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-8)
- Entry-level subscriptions with very limited scope reported from $5,000/year
- API access typically adds 30–60% to base subscription cost

Altss publishes its price; Preqin does not. On the reported figures, Altss sits materially below Preqin for equivalent user counts and coverage depth, and you can check that before taking a sales call.

*Preqin pricing data compiled from Vendr Marketplace transaction data, TrustRadius verified customer reports, and multiple independent third-party pricing databases accessed July 2026.*

## If your primary question is “how did this fund perform?”, Preqin delivers more than Altss, and no amount of family-office depth changes that.

Where Preqin wins

The two platforms are built for different jobs. These are the jobs Preqin is built for.

1. 01

   ### Historical fund performance data

Preqin's 20+ years of IRR, TVPI, DPI, and cash flow data across thousands of funds is unmatched. The platform has transparent return metrics for 15,000+ private capital funds and 30,000+ hedge funds[4](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-4). If your workflow requires benchmarking a specific fund's returns against peers by vintage and strategy, Preqin is the right tool.
2. 02

   ### Institutional LP brand recognition

Preqin is the default answer for LP-side due diligence teams at pensions, endowments, and large allocators. "Running the numbers in Preqin" is institutional shorthand. 200,000+ professionals rely on the platform.
3. 03

   ### Credit and direct lending data

Preqin's coverage of private debt funds, BDC data, and credit strategy benchmarking goes deeper than Altss's current coverage.
4. 04

   ### Regulatory history and LP commitments

For LPs researching how a given institution has allocated across vintages and fund types historically, Preqin's depth is hard to match.
5. 05

   ### BlackRock backing, and the eFront integration is now shipped

Preqin became part of BlackRock in March 2025. In February 2026 BlackRock integrated Preqin data into eFront, so an institutional client can run pre-investment intelligence and post-investment analytics in one workflow, with AI research assistants answering questions across market, fund and asset data[10](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-10). In May 2026 the same stack expanded into private credit[11](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-11). For an LP already on Aladdin, that is a workflow advantage Altss cannot match.
6. 06

   ### AI research over 20 years of history

Preqin's AI assistants sit on top of two decades of fund performance, allocation and benchmarking data. Altss has a research copilot too, but it answers questions about allocators and current mandates, not about how a 2011-vintage buyout fund performed. On historical questions Preqin's assistant has data ours does not.
7. 07

   ### Cross-asset-class breadth

PE, VC, hedge funds, infrastructure, real estate, natural resources. For multi-asset-class firms, Preqin's breadth across alternatives is genuine.
8. 08

   ### Fund manager coverage

67,000+ fund managers across 160+ countries — Preqin's GP-side database is broader than Altss's GP coverage today, and adds fund-performance history Altss does not provide.
9. 09

   ### Service provider ecosystem

436,000+ service provider relationships covering placement agents, law firms, fund administrators, auditors, custodians, and prime brokers. Altss carries the category but not the depth: 2,319 service-provider firms, of which only 42 are tagged as consultants. For teams conducting diligence across the full service provider stack, Preqin is the reference and it is not close.

If your primary questions are "How did this fund perform?" or "What are median PE returns by vintage?" — Preqin delivers more than Altss.

## Where Altss wins

1. 01

   ### Family office depth

9,000+ family offices[9](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-9), covering North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Preqin publishes no current family-office count[6](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-6); its last published figure was 4,592 for 2023[1](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-1).
2. 02

   ### Data freshness

Public records carry source-specific dates where available. No population-wide measured refresh cadence or universal verification deadline is established here. Page modified, source captured, fact observed, entity verified and aggregate measured describe different events. Check the date attached to the relevant claim; a missing verification date means unknown. Stored source history does not establish a customer-facing historical-analysis interface.
3. 03

   ### OSINT methodology

Every record traces to a public source. No reliance on self-reported survey data.
4. 04

   ### Email verification

Bounce-checking means invalid emails never reach the UI.
5. 05

   ### Allocator signals

Mandate shifts, personnel changes, fund launches, and event participation surface as they become publicly observable — not quarterly survey updates.
6. 06

   ### Data others can't replicate — plus the workflow to act on it

Preqin is a database you query, then export into separate tools to actually run a raise. Altss ships the data with the workflow: a built-in CRM and pipeline, AI-assisted outreach, a research copilot, an inbox with a meeting notetaker, Scouter for investor discovery, events and conference intelligence, and a relationship graph. It brings targeting, research, CRM, outreach, and pipeline into one place — on top of OSINT data competitors can't match.
7. 07

   ### Enterprise pricing scoped to your team

Altss is scoped to what your team actually needs — coverage tier, seat count, organization type. Preqin pricing is sales-gated with a wide reported range ($20K–$120K+) depending on asset classes and seats, and the Vendr average of $51,500/year illustrates where mid-size teams land.
8. 08

   ### Built for fundraising, not due diligence

Preqin was architected for LPs doing due diligence. Altss was architected for GPs raising capital. The tools reflect the difference.
9. 09

   ### Emerging manager friendly

Preqin is often described by emerging managers as priced for institutional budgets. Altss's data and workflow are explicitly built for Fund I and Fund II GPs.
10. 10

    ### Live 35M+ company dataset, including startups

Altss runs a live 35M+ company dataset — including startups and VC-backed companies —, completing the fundraising and sourcing relationship graph (LPs → GPs → portfolio companies) on a single OSINT-native platform. Preqin does not focus on company-level coverage.

## Which is right for you?

For emerging managers (Fund I & II)

Altss is the clear choice. Preqin's pricing, LP-side orientation, and institutional focus make it a poor fit for managers raising their first institutional capital. Altss's family office depth, source-dated allocator signals and research copilot, plus the built-in CRM and AI outreach in Altss Fundraising OS, match the emerging manager workflow directly.

For established GPs raising from family offices

Altss. It covers 9,000+ family offices[9](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-9); Preqin's last published family-office figure was 4,592, for 2023[1](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-1).

For institutional LPs conducting manager due diligence

Preqin. Fund performance benchmarking, 20+ years of IRR data, and institutional allocation history are what you need — and Altss is built for the raise.

For investment and investor-relations research teams

Standard licenses are for organizations conducting their own professional investment, research, fundraising, investor-relations or institutional business-development workflows. Placement-agent and executive-search licenses are not offered under the current published eligibility policy.

For independent sponsors and deal-by-deal raisers

Altss. Preqin's LP coverage is oriented around committed-fund structures; Altss's signals and family office depth fit better for deal-specific capital raising.

For credit and private debt GPs

Mixed. Preqin has deeper credit benchmarking. Altss has deeper family office coverage for private debt allocators. Evaluate both.

For hedge fund managers

Preqin. 30,000+ hedge funds with transparent returns is what that platform is built to hold.

## Pros and cons

### Altss

Pros

- +9,000+ family offices; Preqin publishes no current family-office count
- +150,000+ private-markets entities with current data
- +Live 35M+ company dataset — including startups and VC-backed companies
- +Public records carry source-specific dates where available.
- +OSINT methodology with source traceability
- +Email bounce-verification
- +Continually updated mandate and personnel signals
- +Built-in CRM, AI outreach, research copilot, inbox + meeting notetaker, Scouter, events intelligence, and a relationship graph
- +Published global Intelligence pricing from $15,000/year, against sales-gated Preqin quotes
- +Purpose-built for emerging and established GPs raising capital

Cons

- −Built for the raise, not for benchmarking fund returns
- −Current mandates and live signals, not decades of historical IRR
- −Strongest on family offices and institutional LPs; credit and hedge coverage is lighter
- −UI-only access (no data export by design)

### Preqin

Pros

- +Industry-leading fund performance benchmarking
- +20+ years of historical IRR, TVPI, DPI data
- +15,000+ private capital funds and 30,000+ hedge funds with transparent returns
- +Deep credit and private debt coverage
- +67,000+ fund managers across 160+ countries
- +436,000+ service provider relationships
- +BlackRock-backed enterprise stability (acquisition completed March 2025 for $3.2B)
- +Preqin data and AI research assistants now live inside BlackRock eFront (February 2026)
- +Institutional LP brand recognition
- +Full cross-asset-class coverage

Cons

- −No current family-office count published; last self-published figure was 4,592 for 2023
- −Self-reporting model produces inconsistent quality
- −Sales-gated pricing — small teams often quoted $20K–$50K/year
- −Average customer spend $51,500/year (Vendr data)
- −Not purpose-built for emerging managers
- −Contact data currency dependent on firm submission behavior

## Using both together

Many sophisticated fundraising teams use both platforms.

- **Preqin** for LP-side fund performance benchmarking, vintage comparisons, credit market coverage, and institutional allocation history
- **Altss** for current allocator signals, family office outreach, contact/mandate data, and running the LP intelligence, CRM, research, and AI outreach in one place

If your team's workflow involves both LP-side due diligence *and* active GP-side capital raising, both tools serve different purposes. For teams focused primarily on raising capital, Altss alone typically replaces Preqin entirely.

## Frequently asked questions

Is Altss a full replacement for Preqin?

For fund managers raising capital, yes — in most cases. For institutional LPs conducting fund performance benchmarking, no — Altss does not provide historical IRR data. If your primary use case is fundraising, Altss replaces Preqin. If your primary use case is LP due diligence on fund returns, Preqin remains the right tool.

How much does Altss cost compared to Preqin?

Altss publishes its pricing: Family Office Intelligence at $15,000/year, Global Investor Intelligence at $18,000 and Full Market Intelligence at $25,000; Altss Fundraising OS, which adds the CRM and outreach workflow, starts at $25,000. Preqin pricing is sales-gated; customer reports and Vendr transaction data indicate small teams (2–5 users) typically pay $20,000–$50,000/year, with average total customer spend around $51,500/year. Book a demo for scoped pricing specific to your team.

Did BlackRock actually buy Preqin?

Yes. BlackRock completed its acquisition of Preqin for approximately $3.2 billion in March 2025, integrating Preqin's data assets into BlackRock's Aladdin platform via eFront Insight. Preqin founder Mark O'Hare has since launched Valhalla Ventures, his own family office allocating 70% of its portfolio outside public markets.

How many family offices does Preqin track?

Preqin does not publish a current figure. Its public Data Coverage Map, read August 6, 2026, breaks out investors, fund managers, service providers, consultants and funds, but not family offices[6](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-6). The most recent count Preqin published itself was 4,592, in its 2024 "Fundraising from Family Offices" report describing 2023 data, up from 1,285 in 2019[1](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-1). Altss publishes 9,000+ family offices globally as approved coverage; no measurement date is recorded for that figure[9](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-9). We state what each figure is and when it was measured rather than presenting a two-year-old number as current.

Can I migrate my Preqin data to Altss?

Altss operates as a UI-only platform with no bulk export or import of records. If you're switching, running both platforms in parallel lets you identify gaps before ending the Preqin subscription. Altss support can help with onboarding workflows.

Does Altss cover fund performance benchmarking?

No. Altss is focused on allocator intelligence — who the LPs are, what they're mandating, who to contact. Fund performance benchmarking requires different data structures and is not part of Altss's current product scope.

How fresh is Altss data vs. Preqin?

Public records carry source-specific dates where available. No population-wide measured refresh cadence or universal verification deadline is established here. Page modified, source captured, fact observed, entity verified and aggregate measured describe different events. Check the date attached to the relevant claim; a missing verification date means unknown. Stored source history does not establish a customer-facing historical-analysis interface.

Is Altss just a database, or something more?

More. Preqin is a database you query and export into other tools. Altss pairs the data with a full in-platform fundraising workspace: a built-in CRM and pipeline, AI-assisted outreach, a research copilot, an inbox with a meeting notetaker, Scouter for investor discovery, events and conference intelligence, and a relationship graph. It brings a built-in CRM, AI outreach, a research copilot, and a meeting notetaker together with the data — so targeting, research, outreach, and pipeline live in one place.

What is Altss's company dataset?

Altss runs a live 35M+ company dataset. It enables the full relationship graph on one platform: LPs → GPs → portfolio companies. Combined with Altss's 9,000+ family office and broader private-markets entity coverage, this brings fundraising, sourcing, and portfolio intelligence into a single OSINT-native platform.

Preqin has AI now too. What is actually different?

Both have AI; they point at different data. Preqin's AI research assistants, shipped inside BlackRock eFront in February 2026, answer questions across market, fund and asset data, and are strongest on the 20+ years of performance history Preqin owns[10](https://altss.com/vs/preqin#source-10). Altss's copilot answers questions about allocators: who is mandating what, who moved roles, who to contact next. The bigger difference is what happens after the answer. Preqin returns a result you export; Altss hands it to a built-in CRM, AI-assisted outreach, and a meeting notetaker in the same platform. Neither AI is a substitute for the other's dataset.

Can I evaluate Altss before switching?

Yes, through a guided demo rather than a trial: Altss does not offer a free trial or a trial account. On the call we run the registry live against your strategy, geography, and ticket-size focus, including where coverage is thin. A demo is optional; published plans are bought online.

## Ready to see Altss live?

Book a demo and evaluate Altss against your current Preqin workflow. We'll walk through your specific LP targets, show you the live coverage, the live 35M+ company dataset and the research copilot, and demo the built-in CRM and AI outreach in Altss Fundraising OS. Published plans can also be bought online without a demo.
