Ocean Zero

Chris Anderson is the sole principal and decision-maker. He sources, evaluates, and approves investments directly, maintaining a concentrated portfolio of early-stage companies. The firm does not employ external investment committees.

The firm invests exclusively in companies that can materially reduce ocean-related greenhouse gas emissions. This includes electrification of maritime shipping, alternative fuels, aquaculture innovation that reduces land-based protein demand, and engineered carbon removal in ocean environments. Anderson has stated the ocean is the most underfunded major segment of the climate capital stack.

Ocean Zero is a separate entity funded by Anderson's personal capital, including proceeds from the commercial exit of 3D Robotics. It has no corporate affiliation with 3D Robotics, which continues to operate under separate ownership. Anderson's editorial background at Wired informed his thesis-driven approach to identifying technology frontiers, but there is no financial linkage between those roles and the family office.

Ocean Zero primarily makes direct early-stage equity investments. There is no public record of the firm committing capital to external venture funds. Anderson prefers the control and alignment of direct positions in companies where he can serve as a hands-on advisor to founding teams.

Anderson co-invests alongside climate-focused venture funds and angel syndicates that share his maritime decarbonization focus. Known co-investors in portfolio company Fleetzero include Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Y Combinator. Ocean Zero does not lead rounds as a matter of public record, typically participating alongside established lead investors.
