Island native Albert F. “Bud” Egan, Jr. and his wife Dorothy H. Egan established the foundation in 1989 to celebrate and preserve Nantucket's maritime traditions. The foundation operates as Egan Maritime Institute, running a museum, a publishing arm, and classroom-to-coast education programs that shape the island's cultural identity. Its mission is executed in partnership with local organizations including the Nantucket Conservation Foundation and the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club. The foundation deploys capital by directly operating programs rather than making grants. Its assets support the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum, the Mill Hill Press publishing imprint, and the Tall Ship Lynx — an active sailing vessel used for educational programs and member cruises. Educational initiatives span youth survival courses, maritime-themed STEAM programming, and interpretive exhibits on events like the Andrea Doria sinking. Operations are concentrated entirely on Nantucket Island from offices on Freedom Square and the museum on Polpis Road. Leadership includes President Charley Polachi, a sixteen-member board of directors, and Executive Director Carlisle Barron Jensen, who joined with experience from the Community Foundation of Nantucket and Harvard Business School. In May 2026, the foundation will host "Night at the Museum," a gala marking the 70th anniversary of the Andrea Doria's sinking. The institute operates seasonally, with the museum open annually from Memorial Day through Indigenous Peoples' Day. The foundation's structural distinction is its operational model: it does not function as a traditional philanthropic checkbook. It owns a museum, a ship, and a publishing press, and employs a professional staff of educators, curators, and visitor experience managers. This direct execution model makes it a heritage operator funded by a single-family endowment, blurring the line between foundation and cultural institution.
