General Information

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a nonprofit civil rights organization founded in 1920. It works in courts, legislatures, and communities across all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C., to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. The ACLU focuses on expanding the reach of these guarantees to all people, especially those historically denied protections, and takes on tough civil liberties cases to defend against government abuse and overreach.
