Harold Anderson founded The Andersons in 1947 with a single grain elevator in Maumee, Ohio. The business grew into a diversified agribusiness spanning grain merchandising, plant nutrients, and ethanol production. Public since 1996, it remains headquartered in Maumee and operates across more than 90 facilities in the US and Canada. The firm's core strategy combines physical commodity logistics with downstream processing. Its grain group buys and sells corn, soybeans, and wheat, managing storage and transportation across the Midwest. The plant-nutrient business formulates and distributes agricultural inputs to farmers. The renewables segment converts corn into ethanol and produces corn oil and distillers' grains at four Midwest biorefineries. The Andersons also runs a specialty-liquids railcar fleet that moves bio-based products and industrial chemicals. In May 2024, CEO Bill Krueger led The Andersons through the acquisition of Skyland Grain's ethanol plant in Kansas, adding 70 million gallons of annual production capacity (per the firm, May 2024).
