It is both. David Cummings operates a startup studio that co-founds B2B SaaS companies using his personal capital, and a venture fund that writes early-stage checks to external Atlanta-based founders. Studio companies receive shared resources inside Atlanta Tech Village; fund investments are traditional seed-stage minority positions. The studio does not take outside LP capital for new-company creation.

David Cummings founded and owns Atlanta Tech Village, the 100,000-square-foot entrepreneurship center that houses over 300 startups. Atlanta Ventures' portfolio companies and studio-born startups occupy space there, creating a proprietary sourcing and diligence funnel. The Village operates as an independent real-estate asset, but its tenant base is the primary deal-flow mechanism for the venture fund.

David Cummings is the sole Managing Partner and makes all final investment decisions. The firm uses operating partners and Entrepreneurs-in-Residence tactically, but there is no investment committee beyond Cummings himself. No. The firm has a hard geographic mandate: portfolio companies must be headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. Founders who are willing to relocate to Atlanta pre- or post-investment may be considered, but the firm does not make exceptions for remote teams or satellite offices.

The firm typically writes the first institutional check, often before a product is fully built for studio-created companies, and alongside a live product with early traction for external fund investments. The firm does not lead Series A rounds but will follow on selectively through separate vehicles.

Cummings co-founded and bootstrapped Pardot, a B2B marketing-automation platform acquired by ExactTarget in 2012 for $95 million. That exit provided the personal capital base that funds the studio's net-new company creation and anchors the venture fund. He has reinvested subsequent returns into the Atlanta Ventures platform.

The studio arm is funded entirely by Cummings' personal capital and does not accept outside limited partners for new-company creation. The venture fund syndicates select deals to external investors on a deal-by-deal basis, typically high-net-worth individuals and family offices with Atlanta ties, rather than through a traditional blind-pool fund structure.
