The March 2025 sale to William Chisholm for $6.1 billion signals a transition of control by 2028.

Value is generated through NBA media rights contracts — the league’s national deal with Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery funds base distributions to all teams — and a local deal with NBC Sports Boston. The ownership group holds an interest in TD Garden, a multi-use venue that yields event, sponsorship, concession, and surrounding real-estate appreciation. The team’s global merchandise operation functions as a luxury lifestyle brand with international reach.

It operates as a private partnership with attributes of a holding company. The board includes partners from private equity and operating businesses who treat the franchise as a long-duration, trophy asset with uncorrelated cash flows. Unlike a family office, there is no pooled fund or external capital — the partnership carries the franchise directly on its balance sheet.

Stephen Pagliuca’s investment activity via Bain Capital is separate from the partnership vehicle that owns the Celtics. The franchise itself has not disclosed a formal venture-investment or fund-commitment program. Individual partners may make personal investments, but those are walled off from team operations.

The Shamrock Foundation is a public charity operated under section 501(c)(3) that runs community outreach and educational programs. It is structurally separate from team operations and does not commingle franchise revenue. No team equity is held within the foundation.

The franchise does not pursue GP co-investments as an entity. When the team requires real-estate development partners around TD Garden, Delaware North acts as the operating partner. Equity partners in the franchise itself are typically high-net-worth individuals who purchase limited-percentage stakes rather than institutional LPs seeking carried-interest economics.

William Chisholm agreed to buy a controlling stake in March 2025 for $6.1 billion — the highest price ever paid for any North American sports team — but Wyc Grousbeck remains Governor during a transition through 2028. This creates a two-phase governance model where the original operating brain stays on while the new controlling partner assumes financial exposure.
