The Cambridge University Endowment Fund was established in 2008 as a unitised pool that invests gifts to finance scholarships, teaching posts, and research programs. University of Cambridge Investment Management Limited manages day-to-day decisions under the oversight of the university as sole shareholder and trustee. CUEF allocates across real estate, venture capital, private equity, and listed equities. Real-asset holdings include the 12 Soho Square joint venture, the Tesco sale-and-leaseback portfolio valued at $318 million, the Eddington mixed-use development, and University Farm. Venture exposure runs through Cambridge Innovation Capital and ParaFi Capital. Private-equity commitments include EMK Capital, CBPE Capital, and Endless. Public positions feature an ESG-screened S&P 500 ETF and custom Nasdaq futures that exclude conventional energy names. Activity centers on the United Kingdom with additional exposure across global markets. The fund reports $5.2 billion in assets and employs 50 professionals at its Cambridge headquarters. It maintains relationships with JPMorgan Chase as custodian and PwC as auditor. In January 2024 Tilly Franklin appeared on the Capital Allocators Podcast to discuss manager selection and sustainability targets. Adjacent vehicles include the Gates Cambridge Trust and the Cambridge Commonwealth, European and International Trust. CUEF operates as a unitised endowment owned directly by the University of Cambridge, with additional capital supplied by individual colleges such as Trinity and Jesus. This structure creates a single governance layer between the university and its investment manager, distinct from multi-manager or external-adviser models used by peer endowments.
