Carilion New River Valley Medical Center was established in 1999 on the site of the former Radford Community Hospital. Nancy Howell Agee previously served as CEO and President of the parent Carilion Clinic and oversaw the creation of its Healing Arts Program. The facility functions as a community hospital with 146 beds and maintains formal ties to academic institutions. The medical center provides Level III trauma services and emergency care across the New River Valley region. It participates in two named academic partnerships: the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute with Virginia Tech, plus Radford University Carilion for health sciences training.
