Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina

Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina was established in 1974 by the Rotary Club of Charleston. Darrin Goss, Sr. serves as President and CEO. The foundation focuses on equity, well-being, and opportunity in the Southern Lowcountry through donor engagement and targeted distributions. The foundation deploys capital across grantmaking, impact investing, and scholarships. Asset classes include real estate via the Place-Based Impact Investing pool, healthcare through programs such as Insure SC, and education via the Reverend Pinckney Scholarship Program. Confirmed holdings include positions in Metanoia affordable housing, Palmetto Project, and North Charleston Opportunity Center. Activity centers on South Carolina with additional reach through supporting organizations such as the Charleston JCC Foundation. The foundation reports $480 million in assets and maintains offices in North Charleston and Beaufort. It participates in memberships including the Council on Foundations and Philanthropy Southeast. In January 2024 it held its 50th anniversary celebration in North Charleston. Adjacent vehicles include five geographic and thematic funds such as the Beaufort Fund and the Lowcountry Unity Fund. The foundation separates its traditional endowment from its impact pool to enforce distinct return and social-impact mandates. Governance includes a board chaired by Shawan Gillians with oversight from service providers Elliott Davis and Global Endowment Management.
