Founders are typically technical practitioners — cryptographers, reverse engineers, data scientists — with classified or restricted research backgrounds. This sourcing pipeline is the structural backbone of the firm's deal flow.

Neither. DataTribe describes itself as a "foundry" — an operational model where the firm provides engineering, design, and business resources inside a structured 150-day residency before the company formally raises institutional capital. The output is a fully formed startup with a product and early customer traction, not a demo-day presentation.

DataTribe acts as a feeder to Series A investors. After the residency, companies historically raise from firms including AllegisCyber, New Enterprise Associates, and Paladin Capital Group. The foundry itself does not lead later rounds but facilitates warm introductions and often retains board involvement.

DataTribe focuses exclusively on deep-technology applications in cybersecurity, data infrastructure, and applied machine learning. Consumer applications, fintech, and general SaaS fall outside the firm's mandate. The technical bar is high: portfolio companies typically involve novel encryption, network detection algorithms, or large-scale data analytics.

Selection decisions are led by the three co-founders — Mike Janke, Bob Ackerman, and John Funge — drawing on the technical evaluation team inside the Fulton residency. Because the model includes an operational build phase, the decision to accept a founding team is functionally a commitment of internal engineering hours as much as capital.
