Defiance College Endowment

The college balance sheet includes the main campus at 701 North Clinton Street, the Anthony Wayne Library of American Study Collections, and the Thoreau Wildlife Sanctuary, established in partnership with the Diehl Family Foundation. These are held as operating or programmatic assets rather than investable capital. The sanctuary in particular represents a place-based philanthropic asset that integrates with the college's environmental programming.

Northwest Ohio faces a well-documented decline in college-age population, which pressures tuition revenue at private institutions like Defiance College. The endowment's spending policy must balance current operating needs with long-term preservation in an environment where enrollment-driven revenue is structurally challenged. This context makes the endowment's draw rate a more acute governance concern than at demographically growing institutions.
