Establishment Labs was founded in 2004 by Juan José Chacón Quirós in Alajuela, Costa Rica, to design, manufacture, and commercialize silicone breast implants and other women's health products. The firm is a vertically integrated medical-device company, controlling its own manufacturing facilities and R&D pipeline, rather than a family office or fund. Its product portfolio focuses on breast aesthetics and reconstruction, including the Motiva Implant Matrix line, which features proprietary surface technology and RFID-enabled traceability. The company distributes in over 80 countries, with a direct sales force in Brazil and the European Union, and a growing clinical presence in Asia. In 2018, it completed an IPO on Nasdaq under the ticker ESTA, raising capital to pursue PMA approval from the FDA. In August 2023, it received FDA clearance for its Motiva breast implants, triggering a commercial launch in the US, its largest target market by revenue opportunity. Establishment Labs' structural differentiator is its fully integrated Costa Rica-based manufacturing model — rare among global implant makers, who typically use contract manufacturers in higher-cost jurisdictions — which gives it operating-leverage advantages and direct quality control over a complex regulatory product line.
