FACIT

FACIT draws its pipeline almost exclusively from Ontario research institutions, primarily the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research and associated academic hospitals. The foundation works closely with tech-transfer offices and principal investigators to identify commercially viable oncology projects. This deep institutional integration gives it a first look at assets that broader Canadian and US life-science VCs often do not see until a formal spinout process begins.

FACIT is a registered charitable foundation that operates an active venture portfolio. Its legal structure is that of a nonprofit, and all returns from its investments are recycled into its research-commercialization mandate. The operating model, however, mirrors a sector-focused VC: it takes equity, sits on boards, and manages exits.

FACIT's investment mandate focuses on Ontario-originated oncology intellectual property. It has occasionally supported portfolio companies in accessing US markets or collaborating with US-based co-investors, but it does not lead rounds in companies without a meaningful Ontario research connection.

FACIT is stage-agnostic within its mandate but concentrates on seed and Series A oncology rounds. It acts as the initial institutional capital for many of its portfolio companies, often forming the company around a specific research program. It will follow on selectively in later rounds for high-performing assets.

FACIT was created with seed funding from the Ontario government alongside the establishment of the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research in the mid-2000s. While structurally independent, FACIT serves as the primary commercialization partner for OICR-developed intellectual property, providing both formation capital and strategic board-level support to spinout companies.
