Fondation Botnar was established in 2003 by Marcela Botnar to extend the family's philanthropic activities that began with the Camelia Botnar Foundation in 1979. The underlying wealth originated from Octav Botnar's automotive distribution business in the United Kingdom. The foundation maintains its headquarters in Basel and operates exclusively as a grant-making and venture-philanthropy entity. Capital is deployed across healthcare, digital health, artificial intelligence, and clean technology through early-stage seed commitments and direct ownership positions. Confirmed holdings include Safetipin in urban safety technology, D-Tree International in digital health, and Promethean Energy in environmental services. Geographic reach spans Switzerland, India, the United Kingdom, Senegal, and additional markets in Africa and Asia. The foundation also commits multi-year grants to the Basel Research Centre for Child Health, established in 2018 with CHF 165 million, and the Botnar Institute of Immune Engineering, launched in 2024 with a CHF 900 million commitment over fifteen years. The organization lists no disclosed headcount. It maintains membership in SwissFoundations and works with service providers including Blue Earth Capital for investment management and Seedstars Capital for venture partnerships. In September 2024 Andrea Studer was appointed CEO, succeeding Stefan Germann who had led the foundation since 2017. Additional vehicles include the Camelia Botnar Foundation focused on vocational training. The foundation's structure separates philanthropic grant-making from its venture-philanthropy portfolio, with ownership roles held directly in several portfolio companies rather than through external fund commitments. This direct-ownership model is paired with long-term research institute funding that creates sustained operational relationships in Switzerland.
