Fondazione Carical

The foundation was created in 1992 when Italy's Amato Law required the 1861-founded savings bank to separate its commercial banking operations from its charitable activities. The foundation retained the philanthropic mission and an equity stake in the newly formed banking joint-stock company. The original Cassa di Risparmio eventually became part of the BPER Banca group through successive mergers in the Italian banking consolidation wave of the 1990s and 2000s.

Investment decisions are governed by the foundation's board, currently led by President Giovanni Pensabene with Director Carlo Cannataro. Italian banking foundations operate under a governance model where the board sets strategic asset allocation and investment policy, with day-to-day management typically delegated to professional staff or external asset managers. Fondazione con il Sud is a national foundation created in 2006 by ACRI and multiple Italian banking foundations to channel private philanthropic capital into social development projects across southern Italy. Carical participates as a member foundation, pooling resources with peer institutions to fund initiatives that individual foundations could not support at scale. This vehicle allows Carical to extend its philanthropic reach beyond its direct grantmaking capacity in Calabria and Basilicata.

All Italian banking foundations, including Carical, operate under the supervision of the Ministry of Economy and Finance pursuant to the Ciampi Law (Law 461/1998) and subsequent legislative decrees. The foundation maintains an art collection housed at the Galleria Nazionale di Cosenza in Palazzo Arnone, a historic building in Cosenza's center. The collection forms part of the foundation's cultural heritage mandate, preserving artworks accumulated during the original savings bank's history and subsequent acquisitions. It is accessible to the public through the national gallery framework, reflecting the foundation's role as a cultural steward for the region.
