Fondazione Con il Sud

The foundation does not have a traditional CIO or investment committee managing a financial portfolio for returns. Stefano Consiglio, as president, and the board of directors oversee the allocation of the foundation's endowment toward grant-making. Grant decisions follow a structured call-for-proposals process evaluated by internal staff and external reviewers. The focus is on social return rather than financial return, with operational management handled by the secretary general.

The foundation originates projects predominantly through public calls for proposals, which are announced on its website and through ACRI and other third-sector networks. Nonprofit organizations, social cooperatives, and community foundations operating in the six target regions submit applications. The foundation sometimes uses structured partnerships with local institutions to co-design calls. There is no unsolicited, private deal-sourcing channel comparable to a typical venture or private equity firm.

It is an institutional foundation. It was founded by ACRI and the Italian third-sector forum, not by a single family. Its endowment comes from a consortium of Italian banking foundations, making it a collective philanthropic vehicle rather than a single-family office. It operates under a memorandum of understanding with the Italian government and is regulated as a private nonprofit.

The foundation does not make fund commitments in the traditional asset management sense. It does not invest as a limited partner in private equity, venture capital, or hedge funds. Its capital goes entirely into direct grants to operating nonprofits and social enterprises. An exception is the subsidiary Con i Bambini, which manages a dedicated government-aligned fund for educational poverty, but this remains a grant-making, not an investment, vehicle.

The foundation explicitly avoids for-profit investment sectors. It does not engage in venture capital, private equity, real estate speculation, or fund-of-funds strategies. Its mandate is strictly limited to social cohesion and nonprofit activities. Sectors like fintech, industrial tech, and luxury goods are out of scope. It also does not fund activities outside the six designated southern regions of Italy.

Con i Bambini is a wholly controlled subsidiary of Fondazione Con il Sud, established in 2016. It was created specifically to manage the Fund for the Fight against Child Educational Poverty, an initiative backed by Italian banking foundations and the government. Marco Rossi-Doria serves as president of Con i Bambini. The subsidiary operates with its own governance but falls under the strategic umbrella of Fondazione Con il Sud.

The foundation itself is the primary philanthropic structure. The subsidiary Con i Bambini is functionally separated with dedicated governance and a specific mandate. Both are funded by private banking foundation contributions, but Con i Bambini's operations are bound by a government agreement on educational poverty. The separation prevents commingling of general social cohesion funds with the targeted educational fund.
