Grand Foundation was established in 1996 by Jerry Groswold, then CEO of Winter Park Resort, to channel the resort economy's success into local community needs. Its founding partners — Winter Park Resort, Granby Ranch, and the YMCA of the Rockies — anchor a funding model that blends resort revenue with individual donor-advised giving. The foundation operates from a small office on Zerex Street in Fraser and maintains a physical presence in Winter Park and Granby. Grant-making spans five program areas: health and human services, arts and culture, environment, education, and amateur sports. The foundation holds a marketable securities portfolio alongside real assets that include the Grand Foundation Office, a Winter Park Station commercial unit, and the Nuche Village residential property in Granby. Named charitable funds under its umbrella — the Brammer Family Fund, the G.A.P. Fund for Youth, the Grand County Housing Assistance Fund, and the H.O.P.E. Fund — suggest a mix of donor-directed and internally prioritized grant streams. Two dedicated environmental vehicles, the Windy Gap Environmental Fund and the WGFP Ecological Enhancement Donor Fund, focus on water and habitat issues specific to the Colorado headwaters region. The foundation’s architecture is unusual: it functions as a community foundation for a single rural county, with principal funding sourced from tourism operators rather than a single-family donor base. This creates a governance structure where resort business cycles directly influence grant capacity, making the foundation a de facto economic pass-through between Grand County's dominant industry and its social services.
