The Henry Ford Health System Foundation was established in 1974 as the primary charitable and investment affiliate of Henry Ford Health. Its mission is to underwrite healthcare science, community health programs, and clinical initiatives across the system’s 13 hospitals and 550 sites in Michigan. Benson Ford Jr. serves as a trustee, with Edsel B. Ford II and William Clay Ford Jr.—executive chair of Ford Motor Company—holding honorary director roles, maintaining a multi-generational Ford family presence in the governance of what remains one of Detroit’s anchor institutions. The foundation employs a venture capital strategy, deploying capital primarily through generalist venture funds. While it does not publicly disclose its asset allocation, known investment relationships include a partnership with Michigan State University through the Henry Ford + MSU Innovation Fund, which backs early-stage research commercialization. The foundation also maintains DCI-backed real estate holdings, including the Brigitte Harris Cancer Pavilion and mixed-use development ArtBlock at 1411 Holden in Detroit, as well as One Ford Place, a commercial property that houses its administrative offices. The foundation works with corporate and philanthropic partners across Michigan. Its Game On Cancer campaign, a multi-year fundraising vehicle, is organized in partnership with the Detroit Lions. Trustee Sandra E. Pierce, who also serves as vice chair of Penske Automotive Group and a director at American Axle & Manufacturing, provides additional overlap with Detroit’s automotive and industrial base. In May 2025, the foundation received national attention when the NFL visited Henry Ford Health to support cancer outcome initiatives, marking a continuation of its high-profile local partnerships. The foundation’s structural differentiator is its integration with an operating health system that predates it by six decades—Henry Ford Hospital opened in 1915—and its sustained Ford family governance into the sixth generation of the industrial dynasty. This architecture blurs the line between an endowed healthcare foundation and a living corporate philanthropy, with the foundation’s investment returns and donor capital directly funding Henry Ford Health’s more than 1,800 active research projects and the $780 million in uncompensated care the system provides annually.
