Hezlep Family Foundation

The foundation became the primary family investment and philanthropic vehicle after private equity firm Bridgepoint acquired a majority stake in Econolite in 2022. Econolite, run by Mark Hezlep, was the leading North American supplier of traffic signal controllers and intelligent transportation systems — a deeply entrenched industrial business built over decades by the Hezlep family. The transaction converted an operating business into concentrated liquid wealth, shifting the family's posture from operators to allocators.

Governance is concentrated among immediately named family principals: founder Herbert Hezlep III, president Douglas E. Hezlep, and Econolite operator Mark Hezlep. There is no indication of a non-family board, outside advisory committee, or institutionalized CIO function. This lean model keeps decision-making close but represents a structural constraint should the foundation later add complexity in illiquid asset classes.
