Mark Solon, the firm's co-founder and Managing Partner, leads the investment team from Boise, Idaho. He has been the primary decision-maker since the firm's formation in 2000, guiding its strategy of early-stage enterprise technology investments across the Intermountain West.

The firm concentrates exclusively on the Intermountain West, primarily Idaho, Utah, Montana, and Colorado. This regional mandate represents a structural departure from most venture funds, which cluster in Silicon Valley, New York, or Boston, and allows Highway 12 to build proprietary deal flow in less competitive markets.

Highway 12 Ventures makes direct equity investments in early-stage companies, typically at the seed or Series A stage. It does not publicly market a fund-of-funds program or act primarily as a limited partner in other venture funds, positioning itself as a hands-on direct investor for its portfolio.

The firm targets enterprise technology with a business-to-business focus. Confirmed sectors of interest include enterprise SaaS, cybersecurity, digital health, and industrial technology, reflecting the software and engineering talent pools concentrated in its target geography.

Highway 12 does not disclose separate philanthropic foundations. However, Managing Partner Mark Solon co-founded the Boise Angel Alliance in 2012, a separate community organization designed to expand early-stage investment activity in Idaho outside the firm's proprietary fund operations. This functions more as ecosystem infrastructure than a dedicated impact investing vehicle.
